Tucson Electric Power’s Trees for You program is offering discounted shade trees for sale that are ideal for fall planting.
Starting this fall, the program will offer Chinese Pistache, Morning Cloud and Foothills Palo Verde trees through its partnership with Civano Nursery and other locations.
The program also has other trees on its approved list that favor the cooler fall planting weather, including Arizona Ash and Southern Live Oak.
In addition to the discounted trees, Trees for You will be giving away free trees at upcoming events. One tree per TEP customer account, while supplies last. Trees will be available at the following times and locations:
- Sept. 17, 8 a.m. to noon, at Civano Nursery, 5301 S. Houghton Road
- Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the SAHBA Home & Garden Show at the Tucson Convention Center, 260 S. Church Ave.
- Oct. 22, 8 a.m. to noon, at Harlow Gardens, 1644 N. Jefferson Ave.
- Nov. 5, 8 a.m. to noon, Native Gardens of Green Valley, 20 N. La Canada Drive
While trees generally have slower root development in the fall, lower temperatures lead to less stress and reduced water needs, according to certified arborists. Plus, cooler weather makes it easier on the gardener. Still, arborists recommend planting cold-sensitive trees in the spring so they have plenty of time to establish themselves before enduring their first freeze.
TEP’s Trees for You program allows customers to purchase up to three trees per year for just $5 each.
“The tree program is important because we want to be able to increase our community’s canopy, as well as help our customers reduce their energy consumption,” said Edith Garcia, TEP’s Program Manager for Residential Energy Efficiency Programs and Services.
